Christmas Hymns

December 16, 2009

These hymns are from the first Ode of the Katavasia for the Nativity of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Katavasia are seasonal hymns that are chanted during a particular time and relate certain theological truths depending on the season. Since we find ourselves in the Nativity season, the Church directs us to begin chanting the katavasia  for the Nativity during the Orthros service for the Entrance of the Theotokos (November 21st).

They are sung at Orthros (Matins) from then till Christmas. The theological truth chanted in these hymns is about the Χριστος, the Christ, about The Anointed One, whom the prophets had spoken about, who has come to earth. Out of His great love for mankind God took on flesh and dwelt among men (John 3:16-21). We are invited to join all of humanity and the whole of Creation to give thanks and glorify Christ. The Saviour of the World is born, Emmanuel (God is with us). Where will you be on Christmas Day?
